Pau Arboix, maker of the mythical sausage from Casa Sendra in the town of Vic, has announced that the company will be closing, after 165 years.
The decision was made after the company lost a legal dispute with the government of Catalonia that lasted over nine years and would require registration in the “Llonganissa de Vic” Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in order to label their products as “Salchichón de Vic”. (These terms are the Catalan and Spanish equivalents of “Vic Sausage”, respectively.) Pau Arboix refuses to do this because he considers that the quality of his products are far above that required by the PGI and argues that his company is the only one that makes Vic sausage in the traditional manner: with the best meat, salt and pepper and no other additives of any kind.
This sausage is sold in the main gourmet shops around the world and has won numerous international awards, such as the Coq d’Or in 2006 and 2007.
